Wrestling

I think the pink giraffe (Ettan, the first cuddly toy we bought Isolde halfthrough the pregnancy) is winning while Kraken the Octopus (named after Cracken in Pirates of the Caribbean among others) is in a bit of a pickle.

Ragdoll x2

If you've run out of ideas for children's birthday gifts, here's one where you can light up another's child's life at the same time. Invisible Friend is like Toms one-for-one concept - buy a doll and another doll will be sent to a child somewhere in the world, in this case children who live with their mothers in prisons (yes, unfortunately that's the reality of many children around the world) or in an orphanage. A Swedish woman started the company after having worked in a Thai prison.

Tristan

Isolde's beloved Tristan has set out on the journey* of a lifetime. We have just received word that he has made it to his first destination. You'll be able to follow Tristan's adventure here.

* Hopefully with a happier ending than that of his namesake

Show & Tell: What I Have Collected Over the Years...

...but stopped collecting years ago. I'm sure I have some saved in my parents' attic though, hope so at least as it would be fun to show Belly Dancer and her/his siblings in the future.

First out is Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. Do you remember them?! Apparently they still exist! They were a parody on the Garbage Patch Kids dolls - I really wanted a doll but my mum thought it was a hype and also that they were expensive. My friend Maria had one and I was soooo jealous! I don't care now of course but I was pretty mad at my mum back then!

Second, so-called luktisar, i.e. smell stickers, or scratch-and-sniff as they are also called. Weren't they fun! I think we traded these too. Speaking of things that smell, I also had quite a lot of smell rubbers too. They weren't great erasers really but I guess that wasn't the point of them!

Third and last, manicklar - I have no clue what they're called in English. These were little figures - letters, numbers or objects such as bicycles - in various colours that you were supposed to link up in long chains, the longer the better of course.

This was Musikanta's final theme. It looks like Erica will take over the relay stick for the final stretch of this Show & Tell year.

Peter says he won't build one of these for our unborn child! Can you believe him?! ;)

Show & Tell: Games I Played When I Was Little

Show & Tell is finally back after a long summer break! September's hostess is Olgakatt and she has chosen four interesting themes for the first month of autumn (these can also be found in one of the right-hand columns):

3 September: Games I played when I was little
10 September: If I could decide, I would...
17 September: My worst stupid fear/madness (noja)
24 September: A comment/remark I will never forget

So, how did I occupy myself when I was a child? I played with dolls a lot - both Barbies and regular dolls. I actually continued to play with dolls in secret until I was 14 or so. Malin was my main accomplice but other friends were also guilty of not wanting to grow up completely. Or maybe playing "house" could be seen as preparing for future motherhood and family life. We stopped when the youth centre (fritidsgården) became a more interesting hangout.

When I was 13 my family moved from a flat to a house and in my room there was (well, still is, but now it's my parents' bedroom) a smaller attic, one of those that runs along the walls of the house (with perhaps max 1½ metres from floor to ceiling). In there Malin and I "furnished" a small room and played house. Once we even lit candles in there before my mum caught us and gave us a lecture on safety. This room in many ways replaced the little playhouse and the caravan we had played in at our summer house that my parents' sold to buy the house.

I also liked lego a lot (still do), assembling models but especially playing house through lego. We used to build the contours of a house including walls and furniture, like a blueprint or layout of a house in legos. We used a '1 lego piece and a head to make a baby lego man :)

But with all this, especially the last few years, i.e. the late pre-teens and the early teen years, the game was all about the set-up and we didn't really play very much, except for going through our favourite baby names or having Barbie and Ken have sex a lot :)

I was really disappointed recently when I found out that one of my favourite childhood toys had been thrown out. I really thought it was in my parents' attic (the one we played in) where I still store a lot of my old toys and school papers, and since I got pregnant I had been looking forward to fixing it up. But after both my dad and I had been crawling around in there for a while without finding it, I started thinking that perhaps it had been stored in my grandmother's attic instead (she used to live across the road from us) and had either had been thrown out or taken care of by my aunt when my grandmother's house was sold a few years ago. After all, it used to belong to my aunt when she was little. But turns out she had not kept it; it went out with the thrash whenmy grandmother moved :(

So, please help me find a copy of this little toy pushchair! It's a 1940s (or perhaps early 50s) style in wood. Mine was green just like this one but I don't care if it's another colour because my plan is to repaint it anyway. The below picture comes from Blocket where there is one for sale for 550 SEK but I'm hoping to pay a little bit less - they have sold them for 300 SEK at auctions - unless I get desperate of course.

Another favourite toy of mine, which also used to belong to my aunt, is Kerstin, a doll from the same time period. Though she sort of looked like this already when I was little, so I didn't really play with her that much. I'm going to take her to the "doll doctor" to get her limbs attached again and I also think she'd appreciate a new set of hair. She has a voice box inside and used to be able to say "mummy" but I'm not sure if it's possible to fix that; maybe too expensive and not worth it.

I was also quite a tomboy as a child, maybe because I only had male cousins (in addition to my brother) until I was eleven when my cousin Emma was born, and liked climbing trees and building tree houses. I played football from age 9 to 16 and tried a lot of other sports including athletics and rugby (not that these are only boy things; just telling you that so you don't think all I did was play with dolls). Another favourite pastime of mine was jigsaw puzzles - when I was very little I was a quite active child and the only thing that could make me sit still for a long time was puzzles.

A Christmas Recap

Some pictures from last week of Christmas joy.

The Saturday before Christmas Maria and Daniel came over for dinner and some Wii. Daniel especially liked golfing even though he ended up losing against Peter. Luckily he beat him at bowling.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day featured quite a lot of food and eating!

Every year we break the Christmas presents record!

I played Santa. My parents have two trees, the plastic one on the left (which is pretty life-like still and has even started losing its needles) and the all-year-round miniature pine tree just behind me.

Christmas Day, or in the evening to be precise, I went for turkey dinner at Peter's parents. They had a beautiful real tree. Peter and I didn't have a tree this year but we plan to have one next year.

On Boxing Day Peter and I went to his family's country house in the Stockholm archipelago (Vindö) and spend two cosy and relaxing days. We took walks in the snow-free but frosty and sunny weather.

It would have been great if the lake had been frozen and we could have gone ice-skating!

We baked a delicious pizza!

We finished this Wasqij jigsaw puzzle in less than two days!

Show & Tell: Colourful

Désirée in Alabama has created this month's Show & Tell themes. And anyone can join in the fun!

2 May: Colourful
9 May: Breakfast
16 May: Coolness, refreshing (weather and temperature)
23 May: Shoes (YES! says the shoe fetishist!)
30 May: Books

Since Désirée said to be very creative with today's theme I thought I'd just blog about something colourful that I remember from my childhood. Not brightly coloured perhaps but a specific colour scheme, albeit a pale one.

It's a jigsaw puzzle that was a big favourite of mine, especially when I was sick and had to stay home from school. I used to play with it at an age where I was way too old for it (as a teenager), but it was cute and a nice pastime when you were ill and bedstruck. I used to have a tray on my lap (a red one in wood) on which I practised my creative skills (though I could probably do that particular puzzle in my sleep).

Anyway, the puzzle was a set of three with different motifs portraying the life of a cat family. It was just a mother and her kittens I think; I guess fathers are not too present in the cat world :) I think there was one kitchen scene, one outdoors play picture and probably some sort of tucking in/nap scene though I could be mistaken.

The puzzle was - and this is where the colour theme comes in - pastel-coloured, a lot of baby pink and blue, although the cats were black I think. What I also liked about the puzzle was that the pieces were really thin and sort of rounded along the edges so theye were really soft to touch.

I hope the puzzle is still in my parents' attic somewhere - so I can take it out and see whether my memories are completely wrong and also, once I hade kids of my own, pass it onto them. (Maybe my mother who reads this blog and never comments *hint, hint* can confirm whether the puzzle is still around?! :)

Wiinjury UPDATED

Peter and I have been laughing at all the safety instructions that you have to pass through before the Wii lets you play a game of tennis or baseball, or even a-sitting-down-and-relaxing game such as Super Mario Galaxy.

On Sunday I got a taste of what they are trying to protect you from (and themselves, in case people want to sue). We were playing tennis - we have two wiimotes now - and stood next to each other in front of the TV, keeping what we thought was sufficient distance between us. Apparently not enough though as suddenly Peter, getting very carried away in his efforts to win over me, smashes me very hard on the shoulder with his wiimote.

Monday morning I was a bit sore, Monday night was probably the worst (going to a yoga class didn't help either) but today it's feeling much better. Good thing I have a massage session booked tomorrow.

Updated
I thought for a moment that I had coined a new phrase - wiinjury - but when I googled it I got over 6,000 hits. Someone already thought of wiiplash also :)

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

We've been thinking about getting one for a while and today we did, a Nintendo Wii! 30 mins of play (tennis mostly) and I'm hooked. And I was supposed to bake and blog about serious stuff (climate change) tonight!

For those of you who also like games, here's another addictive game for you: pick the correct meaning of a word and win bowls of rice for hungry children around the world (for real).

P.S. We've got that Super Mario Galaxy game too!
