2016 Recap - January-June

I'm not such a good blogger, am I... Last post in February last year and now it is May of this year already. Oh well... Here comes a recap of 2016 that I started preparing a few months ago but didn't get around to posting until now. This is January-June 2016 and the rest of the year will come soon.

JANUARY
Birthdays, which I already wrote about here. Raclette dinner at Petchie - a very typical and fitting winter activity. Baked bread on sourdough passed onto us from Petchie's dad (we kept it alive a couple of months but then gave up...). Shot a video at work used at a Directorate Day to inform others about our work.

FEBRUARY
Baked cinnamon buns and of course, it being February, semlor, for Harald's 3rd birthday. And I made an airplane cake!

Swans on the tram track. One of many home-made pizza evenings with the friendbours. I started the work trip year with one of my many trips to Sweden (February-June and September-December I travel at least once every month). Kids visited me at work. Peter's friend T. visited for a few days.

MARCH
I got a new passport, reluctantly, since I was so happy with the photo in my old one. Oh, vanity! My parents came for a long weekend and we went to Antwerpen but otherwise mostly stayed local. The weather was nice so we could even have fika in the sunshine on our terrace, though while wearing coats.

We made hamburgers from scratch (not the first time and not last either) for the friendbours and we went to Planckendael animal park with Petchie & family plus a Swedish-Danish family.

March was of course also the month of a very sad and horrible event in Brussels, which I was very lucky to narrowly escape. Now it feels a very long time ago and we don't really think about it in our daily lives (despite other attacks around the world including in Stockholm unfortunately having taken place), although it of course comes to mind sometimes as I travel on the metro to work every day. That particular day I took the metro as usual and got off at Maelbeek as usual and had just exited the metro station and walked up to my office when a colleague came and said something had happened at Maelbeek and that there were injured people. Probably my train was the one that came in just before the train with the bomb, 2-3 minutes apart. I'm not the type of person to think too much about the past (unless it is happy things) or dwell, so I have mostly thought about how lucky I was, am, and not about what could have happened. And the people who were not so lucky were in my thoughts instdad. In retrospect of course, both Peter and I agree that, even though it went well, it was stupid to go on the metro after we knew that first attack had taken place at the airport. I remember I told Peter after we had dropped off the kids at school that I felt a bit strange to take the metro, but he said that it will be fine, don't worry. Well, for me it was fine in the end, but not for others... If this ever happen again sometime somewhere I will not take public transport right there and then.

Personally for us, it was otherwise a good day, because Peter signed a job contract this very day. Actually he was supposed to take the metro a bit later than me to go and sign it at his new employer at 10 o'clock. By then the metro was for obvious reasons not running anymore, and after checking whether they still wanted him to come in, he took the car downtown. It took him a while due to many closed off streets but he made it there, signed the contract, and was then able to drive closer to my area to wait until I was let out of my building (we were not allowed to leave for the first few hours after the attacks). What is a bit funny or ironic or what you call it, is that Peter's new office is located in Molenbeek, the city district where many of the terrorists come from. Molenbeek is actually very central, not so far from Grand Place and the city centre, and Peter's work, the head office of one of Belgium's biggest banks, is located just at the beginning of Molenbeek. So on the day of a terrorist attack he drove to where they live(d) to sign the contract. Obviously, Molenbeek has many - mostly - regular people too. It actually shows how Brussels is. Many parts are very divided. One street can be very run down and with residents from a certain socio-economic group or ethnic background, and the next street over could be completely different.

The evening of 22 March we were extra grateful for our little family and for being alive.

A couple of days later, and only with a day's delay to our original plans, we managed to fly to Sweden for Easter. We were quick to re-book our flight once they announced that they were redirecting some flights from Zaventem (which after the attacks were closed for months) to other small airports. Our flight was quite empty, maybe 15-20 people, and we saw a flight leaving for Edinburgh with maximum 5 passengers. A few days later these flights were full though and the arrangements went on for at least a month before they could partly re-open Zaventem.

APRIL
We stayed for about a week in Sweden for Easter, into the very beginning of April. We had some sunny and warm spring days so a lot of time outside. Good times and moments with friends and family. Harald had a haircut, the first one where he wasn't completely hysterical and didn't have to sit on my lap. We got to try pasta bolognese made of moose and wild boar for the first time.

Back in Brussels spring had arrived properly, at least for a moment, with 20 degrees. The kids went to "stage" (camp) their second week of Easter break. Isolde went to swimming camp and Harald did the usual mini club for the youngest kids.

The metro started running again after the terrorist attacks and at the end of the month "my" station Maelbeek re-opened again too.

We did some outlet shopping with A & L and we did one of many excursions with the friendbours to Ikea. Peter hired a high-pressure washer and had a go at the tiles in the front and back of our house and we discovered we had differently coloured tiles than just dirt gray.

We celebrated Peter's birthday and also his new job that he started on 18 April, both with the friendbours and with a dinner for two at a local renomed restaurant.

In April I also went to Sweden for a girls' weekend with my childhood friends to celebrate that we all, except one, were turning 40.

The month ended, as it should, even in Brussels, with Valborg celebration out at the Scandinavian school in Waterloo.

MAY
May meant more time at playgrounds and picnics in the park. Family L. visited us for a long weekend and one or two weekends after Peter's sister with family came as well. In general we had pretty bad weather all spring and early summer but these visits managed to hit some of the few days of sunny and warm weather in May. With family L we went to the Hergé or "Tintin" museum and the tivoli in our local square.

We also did a short trip to Sweden ourselves as I combined a work trip with some family and friends time. On this trip I said goodbye to my parents' house, the house which was my home between the ages of 13 and 19, and where I have stayed a lot also after that of course. The garden especially is missed, in particular of the kids, but almost a year after my parents' move, it definitely feels like the right move for them. They really like their new flat a bit nearer the centre of Södertälje, where they are very close to the shops, my mother's work, my aunt and uncle and my brother. Their new building is one of those 55+ residences so many (most) living there are retired and they have a garden club, a library, gym and sauna, weaving room, etc. and they (those who want to) meet almost every day for a meal or a coffee.

I got my own elevating desk for work to save my back. Elevating desks (the proper types, not the desk-on-desk version I got) are standard in Sweden but the European Commission is somewhat behind when it comes to the physical work environment...

JUNE

Isolde made a portrait of me at school.

Three friends of Peter visited. We took many evening walks in our lovely neighbourhood and did some gardening. We could sit outside at dinner with the Stockel ladies and one of the English girls in the group hosted an Afternoon Tea.

We said goodbye to our American friends - but we will see them in Stockholm as that is where they headed next. They threw an early 4th of July party as their farewell do - S had baked all week! We also said goodbye to C & J with kids (the family we rented the flat we first lived in here in Brussels) who moved back to Sweden for good.

June was also start of the Euro 2016 football cup, which was extra fun as Sweden and Belgium were in the same group.

We of course celebrated Midsummer (and forgot about Brexit for a moment...)! We invited our American friends (before they disappeared to the US for holiday and then to Stockholm to their new home) and in addition we had Spanish guests in addition to the obligatory Swedes.

And we ended June 2016 with a date night!

2015 in Summary

  • Did you do something in 2015 that you have never done before? Experience the joy of having lice (Isolde and me) and pinworm (just Isolde but all of us had to take the medicine for preventive purposes).
  • Did you push through any major change? Potty-training Harald, if that counts :)
  • Did any of your friends become parents this year? Our best friends here in Brussels had number 3 now in December and Peter's sister with family had their no 2 earlier in the year in April. And our friends who moved from Belgium to Wales last October had twins in May this year. And several other friends and acquaintances here in Brussels had babies.
  • Did someone close to you die? Peter's grandmother passed away at the beginning of the year. Always sad to lose a close relative but she was 93+ and not in a very good shape so I think it was a relief for her to be able let go.
  • Which countries did you visit? Sweden (as we live in Belgium), Wales, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, France (twice), England and Luxembourg.
  • Best purchase: A new car with 7 seats so that we can do more sightseeing when we have visitors. A new sofa as well although I think I like the style of our old one better, but we really needed a new one.
  • An important date/day: Peter and I had our fifth wedding anniversary on 1 November 2015 and it was ten years since we met around the same time.
Excursion with the cousins' boat in August 2015

  • Did something make you really happy? The news that my friend Jenny who has lived in Brazil for the last four years was going to move back to Europe and Sweden.
  • Do you miss something during 2015 that you would like in 2016? More visits from family and friends.
  • What do you wish you had done more of? Slept more, mainly gone to bed earlier in the evening. Read more books, travelled more locally where we live (Belgium and surrounding countries), exercised more, gone to museums and exhibitions.
  • What do you wish you did less off? Losing my patience and yelling at the kids.
  • Favourite programme on TV: Bron (The Bridge), The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Julkalendern, documentary about Astrid Lindgren, documentary about the oldest Swedish blogger (103!)
  • Best book you read this year? "Expeditionen: Min kärlekshistoria" by Bea Uusma
  • What was your greatest success at work in 2015? Contribution to the country analysis on Sweden (mainly labour market chapter) and adoption of two funding programmes for Sweden. And that I managed to take French lessons as well.
  • Greatest mistake: Not something really bad, but I wish I would have slept more and done more exercise, i.e. taking more care of my own health. Then maybe I wouldn't have a stiff back now and needing to go to the chiropractor (though it is mainly due to bad work environment - not being able to stand up and work in particular).
  • Were you happier or more sad this year compared to previous years? Not much different from earlier. I'm pretty happy most of the time, but perhaps that there's not enough time for everything I, we, want to do. And I'm worried that Peter is not as happy here in Brussels as I am (mostly because he doesn't have a job and colleagues, etc.).
  • What did you spend most money on? A new car, but otherwise, in terms of running costs, rent (for a marvelous house we really like) and Harald's crèche fees.
  • A wish that came true? Not my wish but my mum had wanted to go to Chelsea Flower Show for a long time and I made that happen (her 60th birthday present from last year but the trip was this year).
  • A wish that did not come true? A job for Peter and more travelling.
  • What did you do on your birthday? Went out to dinner with Petra and Arielle and celebrated at home with Peter and the kids.
  • Is there something that would have made your year even better? A job for Peter, more sleep and less work (in an ideal world).
  • What made you feel good? Time with my family and friends, and work (when it is not too hectic).
  • Who did you miss? All our family and friends in Sweden, and friends in other near or faraway places.
  • The best new people you met? New friends here in Brussels, especially an American family who is moving to Stockholm next so hopefully we will overlap there eventually as well.
  • Describe your style during 2015? Work wear - trousers with a cardigan or a jacket, skirt and cardigan or blouse. Black or blue trousers or skirts and more colour on top.
  • What made you laugh? All the funny, silly and intelligent and ingenious things the kids say. Books and movies.
  • Lessons learned about myself over the past year? Not something I really understood about myself this year - I have known it for a while - but I let it guide me more. So I'm not going to prioritise going to the gym, especially not right now when the kids are still little. Instead I need to enable exercise at home, hence I bought a cross-trainer during the autumn. Admittedly it hasn't been used that much, maybe 5-6 times in the beginning, but I will make a new start now.
  • Did you learn something new in general? Not completely new but I improved my French a little bit.
  • Most proud of: That Harald stopped using nappies. We took it slow and let it take its time during autumn - starting in good time before he'd start school in January (where they have to be potty-trained, except for la sieste - and after 1-2 months he (with our help) had done it. He's still in a nappy at night but 6 out of 7 nights it is dry in the morning, and he doesn't want to wear it so we put it on after he's fallen asleep.
  • Greatest wish right now: That Peter finds a job soon so that we don't have to move to Sweden just yet.
  • What will you do different next year? Prioritise more, maybe take a break from the French lessons this spring as it brings a bit added stress to the work week.
The kids throughout the year

I never get around to doing a annual accounts post every year but I did one for 2013 and a half-year report in 2012 as well as a full-year report for 2011.

2013 Report

Happy New Year! Posts about our two weeks in Sweden coming up, but in the meantime, the 2013 annual accounts!  Illustrated by the photos we chose for the 2014 calendar.

Did you do something in 2013 that you have never done before?
Took a big life decision affecting not only myself but also my family when I decided (though of course consulting my husband), to take a job in another country.

Did any of your friends become parents this year?
Not that many, but we could welcome a few new little people.  A good mix of boys and girls - Ellna, Émilie and Ruth, and Dexter and Benjamin.

What dates from the year 2013 will you always remember?
The top date is of course Tuesday 12 February 2013, when Harald was born.  He surprised us big time as he wasn't due until a month later on 11 March.  I also remember many dates around that time related to my new job in Brussels, as I had to rearrange interviews, etc. due to Harald arriving early :)

Harald 9 days old in February 2013

Have you been sick or injured yourself this year?
No, except for the occasional cold.  I did have a terrible case of mastitis!

Which countries did you visit?
Not that many actually, as I was pregnant and not allowed to fly at the very beginning of the year, and then for the first few months of Harald's life we didn't go anywhere, except for a new job-related trip to Belgium in May.  In June we attempted to go to France, but only made it to Denmark (Copenhagen airport) due to an air traffic control strike.  But in July we spent almost a week in the north of Norway with dear friends Maria and Daniel, and of course, at the end of August we moved to Belgium.  I made a short work trip to Sweden in December (where I also ended up spending an unscheduled stop in Copenhagen) and we also spent our Christmas holidays in Sweden.

We also spent some time at the summer house but not as often as we would have liked.

Best buy?
The dishwasher in our flat in Brussels.  Can't believe our landlords didn't have one (although I've heard that they have started to change their minds now that they have children)!

Best project?
No DIY projects this year, except for weeding stuff and packing for the move, if that counts, but we did hire people to renovate our bathrooms (or rather, completely rebuild) in our flat in Stockholm.  We were able to enjoy them for three weeks or so before we moved to Belgium :)  Hopefully our tenants are taking good care of the shining tiles!

Did something make you really happy?
Seeing my children together, and especially in the last couple of months, from Harald turned 9-10 months old, when they have really started to play together and interacting in a "real" way.  Seeing how Harald follows Isolde around, both with his look and literally following her around the flat.  She often announces or tells us that he's there, especially in the morning or after he wakes from a nap.  "It is Harald!" (though she says it more like "that one is Harald" ;) So cute.

Together, into the future (the calendar cover)

Have you been lacking something in 2013 that you want in 2014?
Sleep!  And time.  I was on parental leave February-August and in a way, had all the time in the world, but it felt like it went so quickly!  Especially with a new baby, and with my thoughts occupied on the pending job.  And now, since we moved to Brussels, it feels like time is just slipping away.  I work, come home, feed the baby, eat dinner, hang out with the kids and/or do some chores, put the kids to bed, and the suddenly it is 10pm and where did "my time" (egentid) go?  But I guess that is life right there.  I don't really suspect it to change much in 2014 (especially since I will now be working 40 hour-weeks instead of 37½...), but it should get a bit better as we get even more into the way and routine of living in Belgium (not that it have been de facto that much different than life in Sweden, but it's been mentally exhausting I guess).  Maybe we can get our kids to go to bed a bit earlier (or Harald at least, Isolde seems to be a lost cause), so that I can go to bed earlier, after I had some egentid... Wish us luck haha!

What do you wish you could have done more?
Sleeping.  I really need to discipline myself to go to bed earlier.  But it's that egentid that I also want, and I don't feel tired in the evening but then in the morning I'm soo tired.  Both kids usually sleep through the night (though Isolde often comes to our bed, and has had some periods of worried sleep, and Harald has had a few sickness periods with cold and cough), until at least 7 am, but until recently I would breastfeed Harald at least once sometime between 5 and 7 am.  And the main problem, sorry to repeat myself, is that I don't go to bed early enough.  Falling asleep around midnight and then sleeping until 7 am, minus an hour or two due to various sleep disturbances, is not enough for me.  I can really feel (and see?) how I have aged during the past year, and I don't think it's reversable unfortunately, though I hope the darkness under my eyes is.

What do you wish you could have done less?
Felt impatient and angry with the kids and yelled at Isolde.  I guess it's normal, and kids must learn and experience anger too, but I'm asking for a larger dose of patience with a child in the terrible twos (and soon threes) in 2014.

Little Miss Mischief in December 2013

Favourite programme on TV?
Orange is the New Black, Big Bang Theory and Modern Family and I also liked this year's julkalender (Christmas series) and Solsidan.

Best book you read this year?
I actually managed to read 10 books this year (or nine, as I read most of "How the States Got Their Shapes" in 2012), which is more than double than the year before.  It's really thanks to having a short commute to work (15 mins each way).  Of the list below I think I liked "The Bad News Bible" the most, but "Stenhjärtat" was also very good but depressing (about child abuse).
  • "The Bad News Bible" by Anna Blundy
  • "Chasing Harry Winston" by Lauren Weisberger
  • "I minnenas tecken" by Reginald Hill
  • "Karriär och köksbesvär" by Sophie Kinsella
  • "Pajernas värld" by Karen Stolz
  • "Guernseys litteratur- och potatisskalspajssällskap" by Mary Ann Shaffer
  • "No-One Ever Has Sex on a Tuesday" by Tracy Bloom
  • "The French House" by Nick Alexander
  • "Stenhjärtat" by Katarina Wennstam
  • "How the States Got Their Shapes" by Mark Stein

Greatest musical discovery?
I'm so bad at remembering song titles or names of artists, so though I'm sure I have heard some new and good music, I can't name it.  Instead I will answer that I love how Isolde is constantly singing (apparently I was too when I was little) and I'm amazed how many different melodies she knows!

What was your greatest success at work in 2013?
Well, it must be that I finally got the chance to work for the European Commission and work in Brussels, something I have wanted to do for a long time.

Greatest success in your personal life?
Getting that job offer is also very much part of my private life, especially since it involved moving my whole family.  But besides that, I guess rearing two wonderful little individuals. I guess they are both with their personalities but I also think they are who they are because of Peter and me.

Harald in December 2013, almost 10 months old

Biggest mistake?
Can't think of anything, at least not anything serious.

Isolde wasn't really planned when she announced she was on her way in 2010, but what a blessing!

Were you happier or more sad this year compared to previous years?
I'm also a quite happy person and this year was no different. Maybe even happier because Harald came into our lives and I got this new job I always wanted. But also sometimes sad because at times juggling a job and the kids can be tough (but only up given for short moments, most moments at those of joy) and taking life-changing decisions are not, and should not be, easy.

Something you wished for and got? A healthy little boy and the job I always wanted.  And the little but oh so important things, moments of love and joy with my little family.

Sibling love in the spring and summer of 2013

What did you spend most money on?
Children's clothing and otherwise stuff related to the move to Belgium.  We didn't do much travelling this year, only to Norway, though relatively speaking it was an expensive trip as Norway is soo expensive!  Oh, and of course our bathroom renovation.

Something you did NOT wish for and got?
Harald has been sick much more than Isolde was her first year of life.  Nothing serious but colds that are coming and going, probably because of viruses at Isolde's (pre)school.  It makes him suffer for days with a really clogged up nose, cough and something fever, but also makes the rest of the family suffer from sleep deprivation.   I guess it is pretty normal but I still wish we could avoid all germs!  I also had a terrible case of mastitis that I could have lived without.

Best film in 2013?
I can't remembering going to the cinema a single time in 2013, but at least we watched quite a few films at home.  My favourites as I think back are "Argo", "Silver Linings Playbook".

Seen films in 2013 and rated by me:

5+
Cloud Atlas
Argo
The Lady
Life of Pi

4+
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Skyfall
Silver Linings Playbook
Hugo
Oblivion
Now You See Me

3+
Sahara
Catch and Release
The Hobbit
The Heat

2+
Poseidon
This is the End
Despicable Me 2

What did you do on your birthday 2013?
I can't remember actually, I think we were just home as it was a Monday but went out for dinner the weekend before.

About to be a big sister, two years old, in January last year

How would you describe your style in 2013?
As I was on maternity leave and/or at least breastfeeding most of the year, I would say nursing tops were my no 1 wear.  Casual style, jeans or chinos with a nursing top, until August, and after that more work appropriate clothes, however, there is no strict dress code in my new workplace.

Is there anything that could have made your year even better?
In an ideal world I would have stayed home with Harald to the end of the year at least (at least 10 months, as with Isolde) before I started working, but you can't have everything.  I'm very grateful that he can be home with Peter instead of being in daycare.  My colleagues here in Brussels do not have that choice.  Some babies start already at four months old while some can stay home a bit longer to perhaps seven months, but the maximum is 10 months (4 months at regular pay levels, but then 6 months flatrate amount, which not everyone can live on).

Harald "the Seal" in his new home in Brussels in September (sadly after he learned how to crawl he stopped doing the seal)

What made you feel good?
Being with my family - the children are so much joy all the time (okay, there are moments you almost wish you didn't have them, but then five minutes later they are sweet or funny, and you forgot all about the bad times).  And also feeling that I took a step forwards in my career (hopefully).  And of course spending time with friends and doing things that I like such as blogging and reading blogs.

Sweetness most of the time

Who did you miss?
Our family and friends who we don't see that often since the move to Belgium :(

Best new people you met?
Well, in addition to the obvious reply, our latest family addition Harald, our new friends P & O here in Brussels.  We had met P a couple of times before, and I knew her through our blogs, but we hadn't met O and the children before.

Our happy boy in October 2013

Most proud of?
Landing a new job in terms of my own accomplishments, but otherwise of Isolde who is doing so great in her new country and her new preschool.  She just loves her school and talks about as soon as she opens her blue eyes in the  morning.  And also of how she learnt to go to the toilet and other perhaps small but still big things, like put her own jacket on.

Spring 2013

Greatest wish right now?
That we make our life here in Brussels work, especially after the summer when we're both meant to work.  Making sure we have work-life balance and the kids are alright, also once we are two people working, one child at school and one child in the crèche.

What will you do differently next year?
Several things: stop procrastinating and waiting until last minute to do stuff, go to bed earlier, stop biting my nails, do some sort of exercise once a week, tell my husband I love him more often, have more sex (with said husband of course), get all our photos organised finally...

Plans for 2014?
Stay in Brussels beyond the summer, provided my contract gets extended and Peter finds a job.  Maybe rent a house after our current rental contract expires.  Make new friends in Brussels.  Have fun!
